STORM-Net has been available to the public, free of charge, since January 2024. Since then, STORM-Net has grown and developed into a very powerful severe weather prediction tool. It has also become more complex, requiring advanced computational resources. Each run of STORM-Net (every 2 minutes) consists of over 100 trillion gridwise calculations. This requires latest-generation GPU accelerators as well as state-of-the-art pre/post processing servers.
As a result of increasing costs to operate STORM-Net, we will transition STORM-Net to a subscription-only service starting on Thursday, April 18th. These subscriptions start at $25/month. We will also offer temporary (12 hour) STORM-Net access for $2.49, for those that are only interested in viewing STORM-Net for short periods of time. Beyond this, we will also begin offering a text alert system for addresses which will send alerts for NWS warnings and watches, as well as STORM-Net threshold breaches, so public users can still experience the life-saving benefits of STORM-Net at a low cost.
